49ers start out with a bang!
49ers start the season out with an impressive victory over the New England Patriots, the final score was 51-16.
Press Release with Coach Majestic
Reporter: After the 49ers started out 0-3 last season you were brought in to reinvigorate this team. You came in and made a lot of changes before the trade deadline yet the team still went 6-10, you did however manage to stockpile a collection of 1st round picks which you then turned to quality players in the offseason. I guess what I am trying to ask, Is this team a playoff team and how does this first victory feel?
Majestic: I have to take full blame for what happened last season, I was brought in to make a change, I was brought in to win, I did make changes, I did get rid of players I felt were not contributing, I did let go of some franchise guys because this team needed change, and I did lead this team to finish 6-10 that is my fault. All I can say is I had a plan all along and that was to build a team that can win in the future, I wanted a team that could win this season, and 5 more seasons. You ask me is this a playoff team, I say absolutely, this is a superbowl contender not just a playoff team. This victory feels great, if gives me a sense of calm, it makes me feel like we are headed in the right direction, but we need more then just 1 win to get to the superbowl, so I am just gonna push my guys and we are gonna take it one game at a time.
Reporter: This was an impressive victory though, you outscored your oppoenent by a wide margin and the game was over by halftime. Does that make this win even more satisfying? Do you think this team can really dominate like this throughout the season?
Majestic: Absolutely not. I don't expect any easy wins, today we played a tough team who made a couple of mistakes, and we capitalized on them. We will play some great games, we will play some ugly games, the main thing is just to go out there and execute, and minimize mistakes, if we can do that then we have a shot at winning every week. The win today is satisfying because it's 1 step closer to out goal, the score doesn't matter at all, we could have won by 1 and I would be satisfied with the performance, because at the end of the season the W's are what counts.
Reporter: Your team played a pretty complete game today, who would you say contributed the most?
Majestic: Well I will say that the team did a great job today, we executed well. On offense you have QB Stafford who went 11/17 for 227 yards, 4 TDs, and most importantly 0 Ints. Then you have a guy that I am really excited about, rookie HB Jelani Okoye who rushed 15 times for 172 yards and 1 TD. This guy has athleticsm and isn't afraid to be physical. On Defense you have a couple of guys who made a nice impact, FS Brock Williams recorded 2 tackles, 1 int and 1 forced fumble late in the game that was recovered by MLB Vilma. OLB/DE Trevor Scott had 3 tackles, 1 sack, and 1 Int., last but not least Eric Wright recorded 3 tackles and 1 int.
Reporter: Next week you play the jets, what do you expect to see from them and what should we expect from the 49ers?
Majestic: Well this is a great team that is coming off of a tough loss so they will be looking to rebound. On offense you have QB Mark Sanchez who has grown into that position nicely, he isn't perfect still but he can hurt you. The WR core has a nice mixture of speed and possession guys. Cotchery is the go to guy when they need to move the ball, but you always have to have your eyes on guys like Mike Wallace and Santanio Holmes or they will hurt you. They also have Braylon Edwards and TE Dustin Keller and both of those guys can catch. They have a couple of HBs that they can utilize but the main guy you have to watch for is Shonn Greene, he is a guy who is physical, he isn't afraid to get the tough up the middle yards, but he is also deceptively quick so we just have to keep our eyes on him and make sure we wrap up. On defense they have a lot of experience, a lot of veteran guys on that team that may not be in their prime, but they do a great job in making up for that.
On defense we wanna force this team to be 1 dimensional, we wanna stop that rushing attack right away, in the game vs the pats we were successful later on because of that foundation we placed. We held the Patriots to under 3 yards a carry and we need to do the same to this New York team. We also wanna fustrate and confuse Mark Sanchez, we wanna mix up our defense so he doesn't know whats coming, whether it be a zone blitz, man blitz, zone coverage, man coverage under 2, we just wanna make sure he can't just sit back and find his reads. On offense we wanna attack that front 7 first, we want to get Okoye out to a fast start, he may get around 15-20 touches in the 1st quarter, we want them to respect our ground game. Then we just need Stafford to keep playing well, make his reads and make the smart play. If we can do that then we should be 2-0 by next weeks press release.
Reporter: A lot of other owners are saying that not only will you not make the playoffs but you will finish 3rd or dead last in the NFC West, what do you say to these people?
Majestic: Just wait and see, I am a firm believer in letting our play do the talking, we did it this week and we will continue to do so week in and week out. If you are a non believer, hopefully you are on our schedule, then you can watch us prove ourselves. Thats all the time I have for today. Thank you all, see you next week.
